Today was a great day! It started with a little adversity; our guaranteed 7am breakfast was not so guaranteed. With the prospects of a ‘jollibee breakfast’ looming, the quick thinking of Phillipa and Julie saved us. Sister Pinkie presented us with a plate of boiled sweet potatoes, which were surprisingly nice, if you were hungry enough. We all jumped on the bus, picked up supplies on the way and we enjoyed bacon and eggs rolls for morning tea.
There was a nervous enjoy on the bus as the boys journeyed to the known. I think the boys were surprised that the grounds of orphanage were larger than they expected.
We were pleased to see our big bright red shipping container, sitting on a trailer in the drive way, for 2 reasons: 1 because it actually made it on time and intact; 2 because it was something familiar to the boys, something they could relate too.
David and Peter have done a fantastic job preparing the slab for the infirmary and ensuring that the container arrived from the docks, and I / we thank them for their efforts
There are 6 children at the orphanage at the moment the other 6 have gone home to their families for the Easter period. The term orphan does not necessarily mean they have no parents, but rather that their parents cannot afford to or are unable to look after them.
It was great to see the children that I had made friends with last year. I was pleased that they remembered me and I am grateful for the opportunity to head up this project, as I know that we are making a difference.
AND THEN it was down to work. Our aim for the day was to unpack the container and get the walls up; it was a very ambitious target, as we were not sure how the hot conditions would affect us? The boys were well advised for the conditions, water, hats, sunscreen, job rotation and a steady work pace. Everyone started with vigour and as the morning turned to lunch and then afternoon, the realisation of the effort required for the days ahead started to become a reality for many of us. With that said, all of the boys worked brilliantly and the days ambitious objectives were met.
We returned to the hotel about 4pm, after a tuff 7-hour day. We all enjoyed a swim, the air conditioning and a good meal.

Great to see the photos of the work you have all done. Congratulations on a fine first day of work, we hope that all the work days go to plan just as this one did. Looking forward to seeing the progress. Craig it was lovely that the kids remember you and they must be so excited to see all the boys there too. Hope you are all getting some time to spend with them and maybe teaching them how to ride those bikes.
